Loveliness Lights the Way

a gray light rises
on the way home,
sleet changing to rain,
and rain eclipsed
by mist –

inside I make tea,
fumbling in an effort
to be quiet for the others –
the dog curls up
in her corner to sleep –

it’s a fine dream, this life,
especially when I don’t insist
it climb this mountain
or ford that stream –
let what passes pass I say –

learning at last
loveliness always lights the way –
