A Question . . .

I’ve got a question.

I’d like to facilitate an ACIM study group. I’ve been mulling the pros and cons and beating around for different formats and approaches.

If I was to set up a study group – meeting once a week by telephone and including a maximum of ten members – would any of you be interested in that? I think we’d work our way through the text and just talk about what we’re seeing – what’s confusing, what’s clear, how it applies to living and so forth. There wouldn’t be any charge. And it would be laid back – if you couldn’t make it one week but another, great.

There are other options – google hangouts and so forth – but talking by phone seems easiest and most inclusive.

If that’s something you’d be interested in, let me know in the comments or via email. If there’s particular format or approach that you like or think would be most effective, feel free to share it.

Finally, if you’re in my neck of the woods – western Massachusetts – and you’d like to talk about setting up a real live face to face study group out here, let me know that, too.

Thanks, everyone!

    Hi Sean,
Depending on the evening, I’d be interested in a study group. I belong to one now (here locally). It is fantastic. The guy who is heading it has been studying the course for 40 years. : ) He’s in his 70’s. I’ve been to several different Course groups. One of the things I like about how he is approaching it, so far, is we are starting out with Ken Wapnick’s 50 Miracle Principle to a Course in Principles. It is giving everyone a basic understanding before we begin reading the text. This is really good for clarifying, especially for anyone who hasn’t been studying this for a long time.

On another note, I always thought that it would be great to have a group where we actually shared how we handled a situation while using The Course. And then outline what happened as a result. But maybe that is not a good idea because of what the Course says about the use of miracles. “The use of miracles as spectacles to induce belief is a misunderstanding of their purpose.”

Anyway, I’m game for any approach. : )

      Hi Jeanne,

Yes, I think face-to-face groups are great – possibly ideal. It’s good to have a local group that works.

At the same time, I really appreciate the many readers here and often wonder what it would be like to come together as a group and talk about the course. So if there’s a sufficient amount of interest and the logistics can be worked out, I’m going to give it a go.

Thanks, Jeanne – talk to you soon

Sean, I think that would be something I’d be interested in, but I must say that I’m not good at sticking with commitments to groups, so I like the laid back approach to this in that I wouldn’t feel obligated to attend every week. I do like the in-person group that I attend when I’m in my home town in Pennsylvania and I think I’d definitely be interested in an in-person group if I lived closer to you, but I’m down here in eastern Tennessee, so that’s out!
So count me in! Thanks for this offer!

Yeah, group commitments are not my strong suit either. I’m working on that! I’m glad you’re interested – thanks Aleta.

Hey Aleta, I’m in East TN also, Cosby near Newport. Do you have a study group locally? I’m looking for one.

  • Susan August 21, 2013, 5:39 pm

Sean, I would be interested attending. I am a newbie (Lesson 98) so I think something like this would be great. I do attend a weekly ACIM group (Tuesday night) but it is getting so large and a challenge to share. Anyway, I would be interested. Thanks, Susan

      Awesome! Thank you Susan –

Hi Sean, I have not read your post yet on miracle share, but I saw the Dead about 20 times, and all of them were with Jerry. Fun times!!! Sounds like things are going well for you, and I think they are with me too. The meeting this week is any minute at my place. Gotta go

    • Sean Reagan August 21, 2013, 6:26 pm

Ah, Jerry . . . when he was on, he was amazing. I saw some great shows in New England and New York in the late eighties. I spent more time at Dylan concerts, though . . .

As long as it doesn’t require me to get on email, or any new digital account, Facebook, yahoo, etc, I’m in. The phone is my preferred mode of joining with friends, colleagues, fellow students, so…. (:
    Count me in !

    • Sean Reagan August 21, 2013, 7:33 pm

No new accounts! Simple is good. Cool. Thank you, Anil!

I would like very much to participate in the telephone group you are thinking about. I also know a few others who would like to partake as well. Please keep us posted. Thanks so much for being so involved. Peace.

    hi Sean,
i think it is a good idea as well. we have a face to face group in Durban South Africa and it would be great to have a virtual one. especially as it is an easy going one. (our group is easy going and has been going for years) may i suggest that you might think of using Skype, not that i know much about it, but can one have a group talking on it. it would be less expensive than a telephone call which is expensive from South Africa. i think there are other ways of live streaming if i am not mistaken. (not a computer literate person i am afraid). i hope you can get it going it would be great.
good luck with that i am sure you have more than ten people applying
    with love

Thanks, Debbie. I am thinking of conference calling – there is technology available that lets me bring in dozens of people into one call. All anybody would have to do is dial a certain number and then we’d all be on the same line. The cost of the call is an important point – especially for people outside the contintental US. Thanks for reminding me of that. Getting a balance that works for everyone is the tricky part!

Face to face meetings are always preferable as I was saying earlier but you know . . . maybe it’s worth a try!

      Thanks again Debbie!

Yes! Hope I’m not too late. Am in my 5th year studying ACIM. Would love to participate. Pretty flexible time wise, but Wednesday nights not good. Thanks, Sean! Hope it works out that I can join in! Love, Mary

    • Sean Reagan August 22, 2013, 6:35 am

      Cool! Thanks for responding Mary.

I had so enjoyed your thoughtful (brief) musings and micropoetry on twitter and missed you when you left. But it led me here and as a not-quite-6-year student of ACIM, I am finding your blog extremely helpful in my deepening understanding of the Course. I have been in a local study group for a couple of years and would be interested in a telephone discussion. But if there is a limit on the number of participants, I wouldn’t want to take a slot and not be able to join in as my work schedule changes from week to week and I often work evenings.

Still, I will read on! Your writing is a light on my path. Thank you.

Hi Cheryl – the prayerful running baker. I remember you!

It’s funny you mention twitter – I had deactivated my account to get a sense of how it felt not to use it and see what impact, if any, it had on traffic over here. I am actually writing a post about that today – I’ve decided I like the poetry a lot but probably need to trim my followers. I was very overwhelmed and felt as if many people were not really personally engaged, if that makes any sense. So it’s back up but I am going to try and focus a bit. We’ll see.

In particular I felt frustrated by all the quotations! I am so wary of fast food spirituality – in part because I’ve indulged in to no helpful end – and wondered if that medium was really helpful or if it just enabled us to drop pithy quotes. Is it too easy? I think you actually commented very helpfully when I posted about that.

Anyway, I’m glad you’re here – and thanks for your interest in the study group!

      ~ Sean

    Count me in!
I currently lead a class locally, as well as attend one in a neighboring city. God speaks to us in many voices, and I am always open to learming more 🙂
And I do believe in honoring your teacher, so I’d like to be able to make a financial donation to you, even if it is not a requirement.

Please count me in on the telephone group. Your insights have opened many blocks. Thank U
