Like lack, for which it is basically a synonym, sacrifice is a key idea in the ego‘s thought system of separation. It underscores the power of guilt and fear as distractions from healing. Giving of any kind is associated with sacrifice – with a loss of something vital and important that can not be regained. It reflects the principle that what I have you do not, and vice-versa. Sacrifice makes us want to avoid sharing; it directs our attention away from shared interests. Thus, it keeps our attention on ego as a means of solving the very problem ego makes.
