In A Course in Miracles, world refers in general to whatever we perceive as external to us. We experience this effectively as people, places and things, all loosely bound together by social customs and physical laws. The world is a place where bodies live with other bodies. But it is also an idea – a mental construct that attempts to organize our experience as self/other, self/world, this/that. The world, then, is also the site of separation, and it is in that world that healing tools such as ACIM appear and appear to have effects. The course teaches that there is no world, which reflects a way of thinking rather than a statement about physical laws and social customs. We are not called to deny the world or the body, but rather to learn how to see them differently in order to relate to them as miracle workers.
