Awakening Is Only Natural

When we strip away our ideas and assumptions – personal, historical, cultural, spiritual – about awakening, it becomes obvious that it is a natural state. It is inherent in us, waiting on us. It is not an event so much as a recollection of I have not slept. A Course in Miracles repeats this theme often: we are effectively undertaking a journey that ended before time began. It is only confusing if we want it to be.

These related distortions represent a picture of what actually occurred in the separation, or the “detour into fear.” None of this existed before the separation, nor does it exist now. Everything God created is like Him (T-2.I.2:1-3).

Increasingly I am struck by the simplicity of the Course. Any one sentence can bring one to the state of awareness that ends the separation. Every lesson has that potential. We make it a package and a process but it is so much more than that, because it aims to be so much less. The Course always points beyond itself. It never deviates from the truth of its own teaching.

Earlier, I said that the Holy Spirit shares the goal of all good teachers, whose ultimate aim is to make themselves unnecessary by teaching their pupils all they know. The Holy Spirit wants only this, for sharing the Father’s Love for His Son, He seeks to remove all guilt from his mind that he may remember his Father in Peace (T-13.I.1:1-2).

If we can accept the truth that everything God creates is like God then we will not be confused by

Nothing real can be threatened.
Nothing unreal exists (T-I.2:2-3).

We will not make an idea of it, one that we have to struggle to comprehend. We will not try to integrate it into our worldly lives of struggle and trial and temporary joy. It has nothing to do with the brain, nothing to do with the body. Thus, it ends compromise. It ends seeking. If that is not our experience, why not?

It must be that we refuse awakening, that we wish to continue to place our trust in sleep and in dreams of judgment. But having been given the means to awaken – to end the dream of guilt and fear – is there not a corresponding responsibility to use it? We knocked and the door was opened. We asked for grace and the knowledge of God and the same was extended to us.

So it is time, then. Now is the moment. Delay serves no purpose that honors Creation.

One of the gifts of A Course in Miracles is its capacity to speed up awakening. No longer is it the realm of the spiritually advanced. No longer is it limited to those who devote lifetimes to rigorous devotion, arduous meditations. The Course ends time by rendering the need for it superfluous. You are perfect as God created you. Time is ended in that statement. You are restored to wholeness.

In reality you are perfectly unaffected by all expressions of lack of love. These can be from yourself and others, from yourself to others, or from others to you. Peace is an attribute in you. You cannot find it outside. Illness is a form of external searching. Health is inner peace (T-2.I.5:6-11).

There is nothing to do. There is nothing that needs to be fixed or improved. There is nothing that needs to be rearranged. No replacements, no amendments. Loosen your mind from the world of the self and see what happens. You know what to do.
