Right, Wrong and A Course in Miracles

I think often of my early experience with A Course in Miracles: my investment in being right about it, in taking the right stands, siding with the right wave of opinion, and so forth.

That’s natural enough, in the sense that it’s judgmental and harsh, which is how we have learned to perceive and function. And really, Jesus and the Holy Spirit are quite indifferent to what we think of them and their assorted curricula. Their patience is infinite. A lifetime is as a second.

In time I learned that right and wrong are not helpful. They don’t move me towards peace and kindness and love. They keep me fractured. They are always tacit endorsements of our separation from God. What works for you? What pries open your spiteful heart and lets a little light in and – most importantly – allows a little light out?

Trust that. It is Christ in you leading you away from the world of bodies and time and into eternity, into Love. Be like a child willing to be led by a loving parent. No more is asked of us. You know where the light is: you know how to be loving. It is – beyond all the drama and drudgery and anguish of existence – the singular fact of which you are composed.

Find it: stay with it: extend it.

  1. Thank U so much for being here too. I wrote in my journal this morning this:we are all Joined in this together. I am grateful we are not alone. It is in Joining that the Atonement (At One ment) becomes clear.
For me extending loving kindness is the place where I feel Peace the most.
    Thank U

  2. Sean, as you noted notions of right and wrong are “…endorsements of our separation from God,” but still they nonetheless are concepts that Jesus uses in ACIM both in the text and in his personal discussions with Helen. For example, in a discussion of the Garden of Eden, we are told:

The “tree” which was forbidden was correctly named “tree of knowledge.” Yet God created knowledge, and gave it freely to His Creations. The symbolism here is open to many interpretations, but you may be SURE that any interpretation which perceives either God OR His creations as if they were capable of destroying their own Purpose is wrong.

    We are also told:

Be ALWAYS unwilling to adapt to ANY situation in which miracle-mindedness is unthinkable. That state in ITSELF is enough to demonstrate that perception is wrong.

But when you see B., be sure you tell him how much he helped you thru by giving you the right message, and don’t bother with worrying about how you received it. That doesn’t matter either.

There are many other instances of the use of right and wrong. So they are concepts that can be helpful and can be properly applied to our perception and understandings. HOWEVER, what helps me (and I need the help because I have gotten into some HUGE and long standing battles with folks over the proper interpretation of ACIM) is to remember that even having the exactly correct understanding of ACIM, which is to say having the understanding that Jesus specifically meant when he gave Helen the dictation, necessarily means having – to some extent – a wrong understanding. How can I possibly say that? Simply because The Truth presented in the Course is squeezed down, constrained, and packaged for perceivers and not knowers. It is The Truth as communicated within the boundaries and restraints of language. It is Truth told to people who want to believe that they are holy and innocent but actually don’t or they would never get angry with themselves or anybody else. It is The Truth as must be fashioned for those who are full of unforgiveness, misunderstandings, and false beliefs about themselves and God. When we really understand The Truth, reading ACIM is going to seem to us the same as reading about God in the Old Testament.

  3. Hi Sean,
Many thanks for all your blogs, it always helps to hear another part of the mind mulling over the course and exploring deeper into it. i love the video’s too, the mind in action 🙂
And thank you Pamela for your honesty about your own inner battles regarding right or wrong and for re-iterating the course’s multiple layers of complex teaching with every interpretation dependent upon the individual reader.
This is important to remember as there is no literal interpretation, no ‘right’ way of trying to understand the wisdom within the written words. The course is beyond interpretation, it is a ‘touchy, feely’ course and if we allow it in that way, it’s beautiful.
When we’re ready, we will simply ‘know’ and be Home. In the meantime, we really should try to let go of all that causes conflict within us, at whatever level we may be at. It’s the ‘doing’ of the course we need to focus on, the forgiveness, the kindness, the ‘celestial gentleness’ that the course teaches, keeping our eyes on the target that is God. Simple really
There is no right or wrong in Heaven because God Is
